The Girl from New York

She appears to have it all - and anything she doesn't have, she knows how to get. New York is her oyster, and the best food, the best drugs and booze, the best clothes and the best sex are all hers on demand. OK, so she has no career, but money never seems to be a problem for long.

Her father is usually there to supply the cash she needs, on her own terms - and, if not, there's always a male millionaire within reach who is good looking enough to be indulged in return for material favours. But can all these short-term, loveless relationships be relied on to distract her for ever, or will she one day have to confront painful memories? How long can she stave off the stale, hollow feeling of ennui? Moreover, can she hold down a career and survive in the bitch-eat-bitch world of Manhattan office politics?

Ennui is a tough, unsentimental, ruthlessly honest self-portrait of a modern woman in the city that calls itself the Capital of the World. As detailed in its description of the dazzle of New York high life as in its dissection of the psychology of a self-confessed hedonist, it is a book that will leave you breathless.
